One of the problems that causes this is that the hinges are loose or the house has settled from the freezing and thawing of the ground.
If it binds on the latch side at the bottom you may need to fix the bottom hinge screws.

If a door binds on the latch side at the top the upper hinge may be loose.

Replace the broken tail piece on key in knob or key in lever sets.

With the door in the open position engage system by lifting handle and extend deadbolt by turning thumb turn.
If your handle does not have an actuator chances are the rose or handle is the faster refer to the exposed fastener door handle section above.
Key will spin without operating the deadbolt.

You can tighten a simple interior mortise lockset like the one shown at left as follows.
Using an awl or small screwdriver push the button in all the way and at the same time pull off the handle.
Go to the side of the door that has the turning or push button actuator this is the interior side secure side of the handle.
You can fix this problem relocating the hinges or using longer screws.

Realign reshim readjust lockside jamb so door meets weatherstrip evenly from top to bottom.
